Will I Put On Weight
Because I Quit Smoking?
Dear
Artcademy
I have been
putting on more than 6 KGs since I quitted smoking. Is
it true that I put on weight because I quit smoking?

Sincerely, Marc

Dear Marc,
Not everyone who quits
smoking puts on weight. You may need to be more
selective on your daily meals will help you to avoid
putting on weight.
Nicotine is a stimulant,
which means it speeds up the rate at which you burn
calories. When you stop smoking, your body does not need
as much food energy. This does not mean that you have to
eat less, but it is a good idea to choose low fat
options and do some exercise to keep any weight gain to
a minimum.
It can also be tempting
to snack on sugary foods during the day as an
alternative to smoking a cigarette. Some ex-smokers find
themselves reaching for a second helping of dessert.
However, if you stick to healthy options, such as fruit,
yogurt, or raw vegetables, it can be a good way of
beating cravings without piling on the pounds.
If you are worried about
putting on weight, it is important to remember that
smoking carries a far greater risk to your health than
temporary weight gain.
